Fried Fish

The first food I ordered in Barcelona was fried fish in a tapas bar. I was thinking I would get a fish and chips style filet. Instead, what I got was a basket of fried minnows.

It took me a moment to contemplate how I should eat these. Am I meant to nibble around the bones? Do I eat the head? But I figured, hey, they came with a fork, so I must eat them with a fork.

I ate a good portion of them -- black, burnt-to-hell eyeballs and all -- just so that I wouldn't have to admit my mistake to the waiter. They weren't good, but they weren't gross either. They were just kind of oily and tasteless.

I was too chicken to try the bigger ones in the basket. Not sure if the brains and guts would have created some surprising squishing or popping in my mouth.

On a related note, don't order seafood salad without asking what is in it first. Unless you like various raw squid and octopus parts. I learned the hard way.
