While in Madrid, I ate most of the few meals I had at Hotel Europa, just off of Puerto del Sol. Being in a new city, it was comforting to have a home base. This was mine.
The evening crowd is mixed. There are gentlemen reading the paper. Groups of teenagers drinking Coke. Animated tables of locals gesturing and speaking loud and rapid Spanish to each other. Plus various out-of-towners, like me.
The one night I was there, a street musician serenaded the evening crowd on his violin. It was so beautiful. I instantly regretted my decision to make a reservation on the train to Barcelona the next day.
I asked the man seated next to me to take a photo. He didn't speak Spanish or English, but was happy to oblige, when I pointed to my camera. I tried to instruct him from which angle to take the photo, so that you could see Puerto del Sol behind me, but it was too confusing. His wife thought it was very funny.
